About
News UK
Rosie Kinchen is Deputy Editor of The Sunday Times News Review. She talks here about the diversity of News Review and its future.
What is the process on deciding the main interview for News Review?
The interview is an important part of the section because it should anchor us to that week’s news agenda; a chance to hear from the person we think readers will be talking about that week whether they come from the world of politics, business or the arts. That means it’s very reactive so the team will spend a large part of the week seeing how news stories unravel and who will make the best interview subject. Decisions tend to be made very late and the interview itself is done at the end of the week.
How does News Review fit in with the overall Sunday Times package?
News Review is the news features section of the paper. Whereas the Sunday Times Magazine operates with longer lead times and can commission reportage pieces, News Review will directly reference issues that have been in the news that week or look forward to those issues that people will be talking about in the week ahead- whether that’s a great talking point from Eleanor Mills’s column, a moving human interest interview or an exclusive book extract on the front.
What are your thoughts about the diversity of News Review from a powerful Christina Lamb interview and Jeremy Clarkson column to Poet’s corner and Suduko?
I think that diversity is one of it’s greatest strengths. Unlike other features sections that target particular demographics, for example women, we are careful not to put up any barriers. A lot of thought goes into getting the mix right so that there’s something in there for everyone whether its some colourful opinions from Clarkson or an exclusive interview with one of the victims of the Rochdale child grooming ring. We aim for it to be thought-provoking, challenging and above all entertaining and something that readers can look forward to as part of their Sunday routine.
How do you see the future panning out content-wise for the News Review section?
We’ve recently made some small changes to refresh the section- moving the News Review of the Week section forwards and bringing in some new regulars such as the Final Cut, a concise need to know guide to a topical issue from bank bailouts to Davos. We’ve also introduced the Going Viral barometer- a list of all the most weird and wonderful Internet trends. We have kept many of the old favourites like poet’s corner and the crosswords and the spirit of the section should feel much the same. In coming months you may see a few more tech pieces to reflect the growing role it plays in our everyday lives.
